MaggieCa says, "2.) discuss whether or not you think we can live a nontechnological life"

MaggieCa says, "4.) Examine the rhetoric of the technology debate"
Mr.Cole says, "you could certainly use that experience, Andy."
AndrewGo says, "Yeah but could you explain number 4"
MaggieCa says, "Sure"

JoeSa says, "everyone's so busy in thought"

Mr.Cole says, "Fot the fourth topic, I am offering that you do something a bit more like the first essay than the second, where you analyze HOW the writiers talk about the issue rather than the issue itself."
NickSm says, "i think that sounds like the most interesting topic"
AndrewGo says, "Like their tone?"
JoeSa says, "and audience"
Mr.Cole says, "Yes, Andy, for example. It allows you to write on the topic without necessarily taking sides on it."
MaggieCa says, "what audience would be best to address with the 4th one"
AndrewGo says, "So you have to support all points on the topic?"
MaggieCa says, "that's kind of tough"
Mr.Cole says, "one specific example that occurs to me is the rhetoric in _Frankenstein_ and elsewhere of the technological "monstrosity." What is so powerful/frighterning about this idea?"
MaggieCa says, "ok"
AndrewGo says, "that is tough"
AndrewGo says, "Makes me think real hard"
NickSm says, "the idea that we can get get ahead of ourselves in the technological world. We need to be careful not to create something that we cant control"
Mr.Cole says, "An Andy's question, no. You don't have to _support_ all the positions. Rather you are analyzing how the authors construct their positions and how they defend them. You may make a judgement as to whether or not they ahve been effe
ctive, but that's a little different than saying they are right or wrong."
JoeSa says, "agrees"
MaggieCa sighs
Mr.Cole wonders if he is doing more harm than good.
AndrewGo says, "So you argue in this paper as to whether they have presuaded or not in their opinions"
AndrewGo says, "Persuaded the reader, that is"

Mr.Cole says, "More or less, Andy. But I also want an element of comparison. How do two different authors use the "monster" image, for example, in their arguments."
MaggieCa says, "However, I am still going to have a hard time with this paper assignment"
Mr.Cole blushes in embarassment at this flattery.
AndrewGo says, "Okay, I get it now"
NickSm says, "Frankenstien had a monster as negative"
AndrewGo says, "Thanks for explaing even though I probably won't pick that topic. Any more?"
MaggieCa says, "are you going to put today's "discussion" in the archives?"
Mr.Cole says, "So, does anyone have a rough idea of the topic he or she is going to tackle?"
MaggieCa says, "zero"
AndrewGo says, "Living without technology"
AndrewGo says, "IMPOSSIBLE!"
NickSm says, "i think that i am going to tackle the technological topic"
MaggieCa says, "I will probably do the same thing as Andy"
Mr.Cole says, "Yes, this will be archived. Though I may be a little late getting it posted. I'm opn a tight schedule this evening."
JoeSa says, "I'm not sure yet"
MaggieCa says, "aren't we all!?!"
AndrewGo says, "Do you believe people today could live without technology Mr. C"
Mr.Cole says, "OK, so who has a stake in the question in whether or not we can live w/o technology?"
AndrewGo says, "Me"
MaggieCa says, "I don't"
NickSm says, "i dont think that we can live without it in todays society, simply because we have become accustomed to it"
Mr.Cole says, "What's your stake in this Andy. That might lead us to identifying a larger audience."
NickSm says, "if i lived in the caveman age, then i probably could"
AndrewGo says, "Stake, as in, what is my audience?"
JasonOg says, "a steak sounds good right now"
Mr.Cole says, "As in, why do you care about this questio?"

NickSm says, "i care about this question, because my education depends on it"
AndrewGo says, "I believe that no one could based on the simple fact that from birth we have grown up around technology"
AndrewGo says, "It is our crouch"

Mr.Cole says, "OK, Andy. So really, everyone _should_ be interested in the role technology plays in their lives because everyoine is affected by it. Right?"
MaggieCa says, "Now we have to have it"
AndrewGo says, "Yep"
Mr.Cole says, "are some people more aware of their dependence on technology than others?"
NickSm says, "no doubt"
MaggieCa says, "I mean if we are planning to make it in the business world today"
JasonOg says, "I agree with my colleagues"
AndrewGo says, "Of course, because they expect in their lives more easily while others seem to push it away"
NickSm says, "i know that i am, because even today, i realize that there are some people without as much as me"
JoeSa says, "good point"
AndrewGo says, "Well, that is more in terms of financial status."
MaggieCa says, "My grandparents are very old fashioned and have hardly any kind of modern technological devices, but that doesn't mean that they aren't dependant on it"
AndrewGo says, "I want to write about people's mentality toward technology"
MaggieCa says, "i mean depedent"
Mr.Cole says, "OK, then. You could, then, choose to try to convince some segment of the population that they need to be more aware of technology in their lives. Explain to them why _they_ should care about it, why it impacts on their lives, the
ir futures."
AndrewGo says, "But what if they become sick?"
MaggieCa says, "just because as soon as they leave home they enter the technological world that we live in"
NickSm says, "i love technology"
MaggieCa says, "my grandparents?"
AndrewGo says, "What forms of communication?"
Mr.Cole says, "Yikes, we are out of time. I have to release the others, but I can discuss this further afterwards, if you'd like."
Mr.Cole goes out.
