Mr.Cole says, "I 've given you a few initial readings and web sites dealing with various substance abuse issues, but I am counting on you to contribute more material."
Mr.Cole says, "Thus, the first part of this project is to conduct some independent research. The plan is roughly this:"
Mr.Cole says, "Your assignment for Friday and the weekend is to find _two_ new sources on the web that relate to these issues. "

Mr.Cole says, "For Monday's in-class assignment you will report your findings on the WB, giving the URLs for your sources and a brief assessment of each source. "
Mr.Cole says, "Finally, for homework Monday night, read your classmates' reports and visit some of the sites they have found that could serve as sources for your own paper. "
Mr.Cole says, "To get started on the research you have a few options. You could follow some of the other links (MADD, etc.) from the UGA Alcohol Education page. You could look up any relavent web sites you happen to know of. You could also use
some of the "Research Tools" links from the Links page. These include some specialized link libraries, reference materials, and general search engines like Yahoo and AltaVista. "

Mr.Cole says, "I am interested to see what kind of sources you find on your own, but I do want to offer a few guidelines:"

Mr.Cole says, "1) Do some exploring. Don't do a Yahoo search and just take the first two sites that pop up. Look around for sites that actually seem interesting to you. These will help both you and your classmates write better papers."
Mr.Cole says, "2) Use this phase of the assignment to begin narrowing down your topic. There are many possible approaches to a topic this broad and probably a myriad of sites for each one. While you explore, follow the lines of inquiry that see
m most important or interesting to you. "

Mr.Cole says, "3) Adopt a critical attitude to the sites you find, ESPECIALLY if you plan on using them for your papers. Recall Rathenberg's criticisms of his students' use of web sites and don't fall into the same traps. Also check out the "Ev
aluating Web Sites" link on the Links page (under "Reference Materials"), This site offers some good guidelines for web researchers."
Mr.Cole says, "4) The sources you finally report to the class must be accessible to everyone. Thus, AOL and other proprietary or subscriber-only sites won't be valid contributions. You aren't ONLY researching for yourself; you are helping your
classmates."
